What Does a Personal Stylist Actually Do? (And No, I Won’t Make You Dress Like Me)
If you’ve ever considered working with a personal stylist but wondered what actually happens — or worried they’ll arrive and try to completely change the way you dress — you’re definitely not alone.
As a personal stylist and colour analyst in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, one of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that a stylist is there to impose their taste on you.
Let’s clear that one up straight away.
My job as a personal stylist is absolutely NOT to make you dress like me.
If you’ve had even the quickest scroll through my Instagram, you’ll know my personal style isn’t exactly… quiet. I love bonkersly bright colours, oversized dresses, clashing prints, trainers in almost every possible colour and an arguably unnecessary amount of Adidas. I like clothes that are fun, expressive and occasionally a little bit much for most people — and I bloody love that about them.
Now, if someone messages me tomorrow and says, “Vix, I want a wardrobe full of enormous colourful dresses, ridiculous trainers and enough Adidas to open a small shop,” then obviously I will VERY happily oblige. 😂
But that isn’t what personal styling is about.
Your style. Not mine.
My job is to work with you to establish your personal style, your vibe and how you want to look and feel when you get dressed.
And that could look completely different from my wardrobe.
You might want a beautifully simple capsule wardrobe filled with pieces that work effortlessly together. Amazing. Let’s build one.
You might already have a predominantly dark or monochrome wardrobe that you love, but want to start introducing colour without suddenly feeling like you’ve arrived dressed as a packet of highlighters. Brilliant. We can do that too.
Maybe you want to look more polished for work but still feel like yourself. Perhaps you’ve spent years dressing practically for small children and now want to rediscover what you actually like. Maybe your body has changed, your job has changed, your lifestyle has changed or you’re simply bored of the version of yourself staring back at you from the wardrobe.
You might not even know what you want yet.
That’s completely fine.
Figuring that out together is a huge part of my job.
What does a personal stylist actually help with?
Working with a personal stylist isn’t simply about being told which clothes to buy.
Depending on what you’re struggling with, we might work on understanding your personal style, discovering your best colours, making sense of the clothes you already own, creating new outfit combinations, identifying genuine gaps in your wardrobe or making shopping feel considerably less overwhelming.
Most importantly, we work out what actually works for you — your personality, body, lifestyle, budget and the way you want to feel.
There isn't a Wardrobe Retold “look” that I give everyone.
The look is yours.
A stylist shouldn’t give you another person to copy
There is already enough noise telling us what we should be wearing.
Trends. Instagram. TikTok. Celebrities. Friends. Women we pass in the street. The mannequin in Zara that somehow convinced us an outfit was going to completely change our lives.
It’s incredibly easy to become so busy looking at everybody else that we lose track of what we actually like.
I don’t want to replace all of those voices with mine.
I want to help you turn the volume down on them.
Personal styling, for me, is about working out what makes you feel good. What colours make you light up. What shapes you enjoy wearing. What proportions feel right. What actually works for your lifestyle. What you naturally reach for again and again — and what has been sitting in your wardrobe for three years making you feel guilty every time you look at it.
Your wardrobe doesn’t need my personality stamped all over it.
It needs yours.
Personal styling should teach you something too
This is a really important part of how I work.
Every service I offer — whether it’s colour analysis, style coaching, a wardrobe session or personal shopping — is about more than what we achieve during the time we spend together.
I want you to understand why.
Why that colour makes such a difference. Why one outfit feels brilliant while another never quite works. Why you keep buying the same type of thing and not wearing it. Why certain pieces work brilliantly together. Why changing a proportion, shoe, tuck, sleeve or accessory can completely alter an outfit.
Because once you understand those things about yourself, you can use them every single day.
The aim isn't for me to create ten lovely outfits, take some photos and leave you wondering what the hell to do on outfit number eleven.
I want you to open your wardrobe six months later and still hear little bits of what we talked about. I want you shopping differently. Trying things differently. Putting outfits together differently. Knowing when something isn't right for you and — probably more importantly — understanding when something absolutely bloody is.
That education is a massive part of the value of working with a stylist.
There isn’t one version of “stylish”
Being stylish does not mean being fashionable. It doesn't mean wearing designer clothes. It doesn't mean owning a capsule wardrobe. It doesn't mean embracing colour. And it certainly doesn't mean dressing like your stylist.
You can be incredibly stylish in neutrals.
You can be incredibly stylish in head-to-toe colour.
You can own 30 beautifully considered pieces or 300 completely bonkers ones.
Style is about understanding what feels like you, wearing it intentionally and having the confidence to make your own choices.
My wardrobe tells my story. Yours should tell yours.
So yes, I may turn up to your house wearing a giant pink dress, colourful trainers and enough jewellery to interfere with local Wi-Fi.
That doesn't mean you're getting dressed like me. 😂
It means we're going to figure out how to get you dressing like you.
